Well I seem to have the current 8.8 drivers (the ones I've been using all along) working well with everything I've played so far with the notable exception of GRID being unplayable and 3dmark05 crashing at the end of firefly forest.
Was playing crysis with streakybacon last night on all high at 1600x1200 with 8xAA and it was still very playable. The card is rather impressive when it works properly.

The only thing I have to do when switching out nvidia cards is restart. I don't even need to reinstall the drivers most of the time.

That's kinda what I was hoping I would be able to do. The nvidia drivers do seem to do the whole card changing thing a lot more gracefully.

Weird, I have to purge the drivers and reinstall them to go from 1 to 2 9800GX2s (or from 2 to 1) or else I can't enable SLI at all, even within the card.

The new nVidia beta drivers support 6-series and up I believe.

I just went from dual GTX 260's to 3 GTX 280's and all I had to do was wait for windows to install the new cards then restart. Never had to reinstall the drivers. I'm using the latest WHQL's, too, 178.24.

Now, the two 4870X2's I have require you to delete the nvidia drivers, restart, then install the ATI ones. Of course, that seems logical.
