Motherboard Will Not Recognize DVD in DVD/CD Drive

I have an odd problem I have never run into before. The only time my system will recognize a DVD or CD is when I boot my system with the DVD or CD already in the drive. If the system is not booted with the exact DVD or CD in the drive I cannot later place one in and have the system read it. This is a new system build. I have tried reinstalling Vista Ultimate so it is not the OS. My CPU is a Core i7 965 Extreme and my motherboard is an Asus Rampage II Extreme. I have a single DVD player hooked to the motherboard at the moment, I have made sure it is set to parent, I have changed out DVD/CD drives, and I have flashed my BIOS. Finally, I have purchased an external USB DVD/CD drive and it works just fine at all times. If anyone has any helpful hints I would really appreciate it as while this is not the largest problem in the world it is driving me nuts if you know what I mean.

Something like this happened to me once, though I don't know about the drive working before getting to the OS. I was unable to use optical media after changing graphics drivers, and the solution came from deleting a single registry deep withing the registry editor.

Sorry that I can't be help beyond that, but it was Google that found the answer for me back in the day. I do think it was for Vista as well, and is an OS issue, as you can imagine.

In your BIOS settings, what are the "hard drives" set to be recognized as?

SATA, RAID, ACHI are usually the only options.

I ask b/c the ICH10R is what controls both the SATA ports and the old IDE port. In ACHI mode, you sometimes have trouble recognizing legacy devices like IDE HDDs and optical drives.

Based on your system sig, and if it were me, I would just drop the old IDE-based drive and pick up a SATA-based optical drive. In the long run you will be much happier.

This problem creeps up every now and then on certain rigs.

About what brent said, ICH10R should be set to 'AHCI' since you'll be attaching only HDDs to it and it does not support PATA.
Your PATA optical drive will be attached to a third-party chipset and that should bet set to 'IDE' in the BIOS.

Clean install OS as per usual. The first driver I'd install is Intel Chipset followed by latest driver for all the third-party chipsets such as LAN, Firewire and addon PATA. Lastly install the gfx driver.
To finish things off download Autopatcher and plug the holes up.

I have a somewhat similar problem with my main rig. For some stupid reason, every time I put a disc into the drive, it wants to try to format the thing first. I have to let it try and fail to do so before I can even explore the disc....

Thats exactly the problem I was having and the link I provided fixed the problem.
you have to either manually edit the registry or use the autofix file in the article.
apparently a Vista bug and sometimes Kaspersky antivirus kills the registry.

Thanks but the funny thing is if I start the computer with the disk in the drive, eject it, and re-insert the exact same disk, then autoplay comes up no problem. I am going to try your suggestion anyway and will get back to the forum to let others who may be having similar problems know if it worked. Thanks for your help. Oz

The work around for this is to go into device manager and delete the optical drive. Then run a scan for new hardware. After that the DVD/CD-ROM will work.

    It's a Vista thing.

Reading the first post again, it's not just a matter of getting Autoplay to work is it? It's actually reading the disk.

Try clean install with only one HDD powered up.

for those of you experiencing no autoplay or windows asking for you to burn a CD
    try this. (VISTA ONLY)
I pulled this off one of the tech forums but cant find the link

Go to the lower left hand corner > START > RUN > type "regedit" > hit ENTER

When prompted either say "yes" run as administrator or RIGHT CLICK the search in the pane and RUN AS ADMINISTRATOR.

    BACK UP REGISTRY NOW!!!

Drop down the following menus HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > SOFTWARE > MICROSOFT > WINDOWS > CURRENTVERSION > POLICIES > EXPLORER

In the pane on the right side, RIGHT CLICK > ADD KEY 32-bit DWORD named "NoCDBurning".

For HEXADECIMAL (default) set the value to "1".

    Save, reboot.

If you need to undo this ............ change the VALUE of the key to "0", so its "inactive."
I have another file I downloaded that will do the trick but cant paste it here.
it works well with the registry edit but we need a server to host the file
    "hint"
