I used a program called mkvtoavi converter from Digitbyte Studio to convert a bunch of mkv files a while ago. I remember it worked well. It's not free, but if you know where to look...

Another good, free video converter program is Super video converter. The download link is at the bottom of the page. You can give it a try.

it takes too long to convert 8gb .mkv using q6600 cpu. it seems it couldn't go multi-thread. i notice there's only 1 active cpu instead of 4 used 100% right now.

i'm on 25% converting, hope the results will be good. a nice free software except we could not determine the size of the output file, ie: cd ~ 700mb.

Isnt the point of downloading those 4-8gb .mkv files for the HD quality?
If you then convert them to .avi, whats the difference between that and downloading the 700mb version?

The real answer is to get a 1tb HD for $70, depending on how many movies you have to convert, it may save you money from power usage
    AMD Phenom II 720BE @ 3.4ghz 1.5v - Scythe Mugen 2 - Antec P182 - Corsair VX550W - ASUS M4A78T-E 790GX - 4gb G.Skill DDR3 1333 - Intel X25M 80gb SSD - Samsung F1 1tb - WD 1tb Green - XFX 4850 512mb

Soon to be upgraded: Coolermaster ATCS 840 - Noctua NH-U12P 2x140mm

    Samsung N120 - Intel N270 2gb ddr2- 8hr Battery - 97% Keyboard

I use MKV2VOB to convert items for my PS3 which can convert to vob, avi, mpg etc and it's free.

MKV is only a "container" that holds the actual video and audio. If it's merely changing the container, it takes only about 5 to 10 minutes to do so for a 15GB 1080 movie. If it needs to convert the video or audio (many times the audio needs to be converted from DTS to AC3 for a PS3), it increases the time to 20-30 minutes.

It can be downloaded from http://www.mkv2vob.com/

d00d, just buy more 1TB HDDs. Seriously!

I started out with one 1TB. Then another two a few months later. Then another one at beginning of this year. Now yet another one last month.
