I think I already know the answer, but I figured I'd go ahead and ask just to verify. I'm selling my E8400 server and keeping the 2 x 1.5 TB hard drives that are in RAID 1. I would like to transfer the 2 x 1.5 TB hard drives to my current desktop (AMD machine). I'm guessing it's not really possible to keep the RAID 1 going from the Intel chipset to the AMD chipset since the hardware/software is different.

Engineering Internships (and the loss of summer breaks)

So, after this upcoming academic year, I'll have completed my second year of EE and will hopefully do an internship. At McGill, there is no co-op...

So, after this upcoming academic year, I'll have completed my second year of EE and will hopefully do an internship. At McGill, there is no co-op program, but they have internships; if your grades are high enough and you pass an interview, you get to work for a real company for 4 month (or 8 month) periods. I don't know if it's the same in engineering programs at other schools.

So the thing is, at McGill, to get an official title of "B.Eng in Electrical Engineering with internships", you need to have done 8 months of internships. That would fit perfectly into two summers. So I think it would be a good idea for me to do those internships, good for my experience, CV and future employment. Also good for life experience, like say if I get an internship in the US or Germany and see what working life is like abroad.

Now, on the subject of losing my free time during the summers: I say good riddance. I don't know how many of you agree, but I'm on my fourth month of summer vacations and I feel like killing myself out of lack of purpose in life (I actually felt like killing myself after the first month). Long vacations suck. It's not that I thrive when I have schoolwork, but rather I thrive when I have some sort of purpose in life other than a forum troll or a TF2 domination. So will the next 3 years with no long vacations be suicide, or a good idea?

After those 4 years, when I get a real job, I figure the chances of 4-month-long summer vacations will be utterly and completely gone. Should I take advantage of "my last summer vacations"? I really think I should do those internships, especially since I hate having nothing to do.

What would XCPUs do?

I've been tasked to fixed my friend's computer, the computer I built for him. However after several months of usage, he complained that the internet would suddenly went out occasionally. However, the problem became severe when he got a flash of blue screen whenever he boots up XP. He couldn't boot in Safe Mode either.

After I ran the ChkDsk (several bad sectors), as well as repaired his XP installation using the XP disk, I can now boot into Safe Mode, although at a very slow rate. Furthermore, I get a hard reset every time I try to boot into XP normally.

I looked online for problem, and most of them point to PSU (which I don't quite understand). I also suspect a motherboard issue. However, I'd like to know which component in his computer is bad, so I can fix it ASAP.

Quote:

President Barack Obama, who rocketed to the White House promising "change you can believe in," is now telling voters they shouldn't change a thing.

His message for the fall elections, which are looking ominous for his Democrats, is that Republicans caused the nation's economic troubles, but he and the Democrats are starting to fix them. So stick with the Democrats and don't go back to the GOP.

"This is a choice between the policies that led us into the mess or the policies that are leading out of the mess," Obama said recently in Las Vegas.

He promised change. We got change, a couple pennies and a nickle left over. And the coming tax increases want that. We were about $13 trillion in debt when Obama came into power, and the bills that Obama and Congress have passed have been reportedly given us another $13 trillion of debt. And Obama tells voters that they shouldn't change a thing, but let him and Congress keep spending money that doesn't exist. Of course, this also means keeping all the present people that are in power instead of getting rid of them. Have to protect those jobs, don't they?

Quote:

So Obama tells voters every chance he gets that things would be a lot worse if not for the stimulus bill and other steps he took. At least the recession never became a depression, the president says.

Proving a negative is a hard argument to make, but Obama keeps at it. He has little choice.

Yes, I suppose things could be worse. Never fear, they might get worse. If a double dip recession starts, it could very easily turn into a major depression. Can't happen you say? Even Bernanke has stated it could happen. As for Obama's statements that things would have been worse without the stimulus bill, etc, that's something we can never know. Like the article says, proving a negative is hard. On the other hand, if the economy had been hit a bit harder, it might have stimulated more people to actually do something about it besides complaining. Again, we will never know for sure.

WASHINGTON — Owners of the iPhone will be able to break electronic locks on their devices in order to download applications that have not been approved by Apple. The government is making that legal under new rules announced Monday.
The decision to allow the practice commonly known as "jailbreaking" is one of a handful of new exemptions from a federal law that prohibits the circumvention of technical measures that control access to copyrighted works. Every three years, the Library of Congress authorizes such exemptions to ensure that existing law does not prevent non-infringing use of copyrighted material.
Another exemption will allow owners of used cell phones to break access controls on their phones in order to switch wireless carriers.
