I gotta admit... solid job.

I'll look at the details later to see if there were any accounting anomalies that should be reversed out but initial impressions are favorable.

I dunno, I was kinda hoping they would have made a profit this time around, but then again they didn't technically sell the fabs so its understandable

the latest rumors say that amd will anounce shanghai in october, any idea when that will happen? I have a feeling once they do, they'll finally be in the black again and then they take can finally take a deep breath.

I have a feeling that shanghai won't be a miracle, but it will definitely impress (especially since according to a couple of amd workers at xs the vibe is much better than it was back in q1 and q2).

Eitherway, looks like Dirk is doing his job well

Oh you mean something like this:

Quote:
process technology license revenue of $191 million, or $0.31 a share.
That puts the real loss at $.42/share or about where it was expected so I wouldn't look for AMD to rocket up after they digest the news. It might see a 20% rise based on tech climbing tomorrow as they go ga ga for Google before the market drags it back down to the reality of Q4 will sux. The best News was the gross margins are above 50% which is where they need to move in order to make a profit.

I'll believe AMD is back on track when they have an earnings that isn't full of strange charges. It always seems like "oh we did well but this <insert new one time charge> hurt our profits". If they constantly have one time charges then they aren't really one time are they.

Gross margin was 45%. Gross margin above 50% is unfamiliar territory for AMD. Also, at Freescale, we were making plenty of profit at 45%. AMD must be doing something wrong. Probably too much debt and fab deals that weren't favorable enough.

AMD is paying off ATI, that's there problem.

I have to say, I'm pleasantly surprised that AMD did this well this quarter.

Good catch fidge I fell for the sucker punch and didn't read all the way through.

Quote:
Third quarter 2008 gross margin was 51 percent, and 45 percent excluding process technology license revenue. This compares favorably to both the second quarter 2008 non-GAAP gross margin of 37 percent, and third quarter of 2007 gross margin of 41 percent.

Whats that I heard too much ATI ?

They still had a few charges and a few one time gains ... it takes a bit of time to read the earnings statement to absorb it all.

I'm listening to the earnings conference call. The big thing here is that the graphics revenue was up an utterly insane 55% from the last quarter and 40% year over year.

When you remove the $191M process technology sale, the CPU group made a loss of $49M. Graphics made a profit of $47M.

45% gross margins when the process technology sales are excluded.

I'd say that AMD did rather well this quarter, the growth in graphics was amazing and the CPU side is well on the path to profitability. The transition to 45nm CPU should help the CPU side of things, as AMD will have faster CPUs to sell and will be able to produce them more cheaply.

AMD is executing better overall, weird isn't it... when you execute poorly you lose when you execute well you win.

Ruiz out, Meyer in, AMD experiences an apex. Co-incidence or not?

I suspect it will be much more than 8B over the timeframe they are stating.

That is some serious money.

Just when we might have thought money was getting hard to come by.
