At AMD it's Limbo time......

Looks like investors are gearing up for AMD's quarterly hemmorage status...

One of the hallmarks of a bear market is the the financially weak companies get their brains banged out. AMD (AMD) fits right in. Today it dropped to a new 52-week low of $4.75. The stock traded at over $40 in early 2006.

Couldn't agree more... Unfortunately I suspect it's too far gone now for saving with roughly $1.75B in capital and nearly $400M/quarter losses there isn't a lot of time before the clock strikes bankrupt and everybody loses.

Excuse me but holy crap I'm now the OP on a thread that's a year old (oops that's one year tomorrow) and 88 pages long. I knew they had an issue with restting the hours on the system time but the year now too?

How Will the Economic Future Unfold?

I thought it would be interesting to have a thread to talk about what's happening in the World Economy/Liquidity/Markets, and speculate about what will happen.

I don't even want to single out a link in the OP among the 30-40 things I've read in the last few days. Anyone can go to yahoo finance, Marketwatch, thestreet.com, bloomberg, WSJ, The Economist, or any of dozens of good blogs (thebigpicture, etc) and get all sorts of interesting takes and speculation. But why not have our own XCPUS speculation?!

This is a tough one.... the sub-prime fiasco is shaking a lot of nerves....

The scary part of it is the Great Depression was catalyzed by a collapse of the financial markets based on over-extension of credit and a sudden loss of value to back up that credit....

The big question is whether there will be a liquidity collapse or not.

If not, it means the bubble of money supply around the world created by liberal lending would continue to slosh around but presumably with less intensity (at least for a while).

If so....."aaaaeeeeeyaaaahhh" (sound of folks jumping off building ledges) might be a sad last comentary from some poor individuals here and there just enunciating the woes many would feel, in my estimation.

One of the most interesting questions is: if there is a strong contraction in money supply, can the central banks even do enough to have much of an effect?

We like to presume (some folks do) that the modern central bankers could and would be able to prevent a profound collapse of lending.

But....is it possible the magnitude of the lending bloat is so great that an economic scare could turn into a runaway train?

At the moment it seems the talking and injections are enough to calm things. You could imagine theorectically that lending would continue along a more traditional conservative line, and losses be limited to various bad loans without any further damage. Could such a pretty outcome be the most likely scenario? For the moment, I think it's more likely than a big worldwide recession/lending collapse.

But....intresting links to show why this nice outcome is unlikely would be fun to read.

I see it as not so great.

We have pollution, war, disease, racism, greed, and plain human stupidity.

America will probably go broke.

Man kind finally realizes (well atleast for a while now) that we are screwing this planet up, but it is probaly too late to correct.

I could go on but

Yeah, Jack, that's what I keep coming back to in my mind. It's the question.

Could it be that is absolutely inevitable? To a large extent an economy involves psychology.

You could imagine the ideal of free markets staying the hand of big interventions until the ball is really rolling along....

"America will probably go broke" -- there's an interesting topic! :-)

It would seem so. But you know, you see those articles about imbalances vs GDP and such, and even the stuff about how it's just a flow of money/blending of economies. Like, no such thing. Like, what is "America" economically now, exactly, besides the simple part of population and the population's income?

sorry habhh , but she was right, And I knew weeks ahead of the current collapse due to it.

Its puzzling to me as well. I wish things like this could be easy to relay , but they arent. If it helps , telling my family about this stuff is like talking to a wall.

Vern, I can take it seriously. We haven't actually "collapsed" yet in the way I mean in posts above, but....some companies have collapsed, some hedge funds. But exact meaning and timing are going to be ambiguous in a dream usually. Perhaps what has happened might qualify in some way. I wonder if there are more details to that dream?

There is more to hers and my dreams than I care to mention, Its no easy thing to bear...According to her dream it gets worse. Like waiting in line for work ala 1930's worse.

I dreamt about the bridge collapse. about a week and a half prior to it collapsing. Whats more is recently I have dreamt of war on our own soil. I hate this. It makes me look like a freak and scares people.

Vern, I think dreams are very interesting, and really like to hear dreams folks have regardless. They can mix metaphors and complex meanings, and direct meanings, and insights about specific real things. I agree with B&C it would be interesting to have a dream thread. It's time for me to dream now...

I see tough times ahead....that's why we locked in our mortgage on tuesday....it isn't due for renewal til Dec. 1st. In some respects, i feel lucky that i've been off work with my back for ~ 4-1/2 years... i'm used to getting no money. If the auto-industry calves(very likely), and my company lays-off or folds... i can still pay my mortgage, and put food on the table. ..probably would have to give up folding though.
