I voted no because I would recommend at least a 1 GB 4870 or dual 4850's for a 24" monitor.

Okay guys, I need to elaborate a bit:

This rig only needs to last to suit my gaming needs for one more year. I plan to transfer to a university next year, which means I'll be bestowing this rig on my parents and no longer have access to it. They don't game, so waiting to save up for a new rig makes little sense.

I want to avoid any card that's 10.5 in (27 cm) since that would run right up against my hard drive cage, necessitating moving my RAIDed Raptors up into 3.5 bays, something I don't want to do, since the HD 4870 is only 9 inches and seems to suit my purposes. This eliminates most longer, newer Nvidia cards (GTX 260 and 9800 GX2).

Crossfire initially seemed like a good option, but I'm thrown off by the extra heat in my case and the extra power. Plus, it uses PCIe 1.0, which I'm not sure can deliver the necessary bandwidth. Though it does have two 16x lanes (975x chipset). Actually, two of those ASUS TOP cards is starting to sound good. Comments? Are there serious benefits over a single HD 4870? Benchies?

Besides, when you move out, just take the cards with you and put them in your new build

Found some nice figures and 2 x 4850 in CF are really worth over a single 4870, especially if you consider that you get them for the same price. There are games when you gain nothin but theres games like Crysis or CoD4 where you get stellar gains and the heat output/power consumption, if you look at it at the end, it's just ~15W more than a GTX280, for superior performance and much lower price, considering two TOPs will perform slightly better,.... I'd grab them.

I didn't necessarily mean "wait for new hardware", by saying save the money. He could do that, but money isn't only for PCs you know.

Just keep in mind 4850 @ 750 =! 4870
Ah yes, 'used'. That's my specialty. Not recommended for normal people.
I assumed we were talking about new cards here. I'm basing on performance/$ for 4850CF/X2.

The performance/$ of 4870CF/X2 is nearly as outrageous as GTX280.

That 30" monitor looks impressive.
How is it with HD movies.
