8800gt's get a new reference cooler

Bigger fan, quieter operation , and same thickness.

"If you want to purchase a 8800GT, just go for it. Because from now on, every reference 8800GT ship to retailer will equiped with the new cooler."

Thank you Nvidia, I'm sure the early 8800gt adapters will really hate you for not doing this from the start.
    New build due 2011 ish....ish

That thing is only a moderate upgrade over your 8800GTS. Wait for the 8800GTS version 2.0 or whatever they're calling it, or even better save up for a 9800 series.

I didn't even suggest an ATI card, knowing that even if it was 5000 times faster than 9800GTX you wouldn't buy it.

Speaking of ATI cards, M$ released a hotfix for SLI/CF in Vista recently and my 3870s are now running crysis with everything on very high, no tweaks needed.

(they still suck at AA though )

At least fix it right to something like "they still suck at everything except 3dMark".

Hahahaha... sucks to be all of the people who bought the GT before this came out.

On a related note, my 3870 cooler is near dead quiet while keeping my idle temps around 43C and load temps in the 60s...

I don't have a 2k to compare too, but AA above 4X really lays the smack down on these cards. At 2X they're about comparable to nV but fall off fast as the level increases.

So Melty, are you getting more than 1-2 FPS difference now with Crossfire and Crysis since that "Microsoft Fix"

*starts looking for another HD 3870*

On topic: I think NVIDIA should have just slapped a dual socket cooler on the 8800GT. It should be a rule of thumb that high end cards must have dual slot coolers.

Yes. I don't know the difference at the same settings because I now turned the settings up some. It's not double the performance, but it is better. ElMoIsEviL tells me the performance difference in some games (Lost Planet for example) is much more dramatic from the hotfix.

Install both of these (you'll curse M$ for the first one I guarantee, unless you check your PMs).

    *sighs*

I can't view any of those links from work due to "server maintenance".

Thankfully, I can still access XCPUS

    XCPUs FTW!

Back on topic: I really think NVIDIA and AMD/ATI need to come up with a better way to dissipate the heat from the cards

I'll give AMD/ATI kudos though doing a good job with the HD 3870s

Thermaltake just confirmed that Duorb is working with 8800GT and i saw some pictures in Guru3D forums that Duorb dropped the temp of 8800GT by 19~25c!

Too bad i couldn't get mine!
