I think it's supposed to send the SB's heat to the NB cooler, that connection between them probably has a heatpipe in it.
Seriously, what is up with that northbridge cooler? If your GPU blows up it will shield the CPU from the shrapnel I guess.

It's like Japan(and most cities ). They ran out of room(area)...so they had to build upwards.

I really don't like the complicated and ostentatious NB cooler. X58 NB does not contain memory controller, so why does Gigabyte wants to put that much cooling capacity on it?
More over, I'm puzzled by the use of large heatsink for the SB. Does GA-X58 Extreme contains N200 chip?

Bigger looks more enthusiast-like, adds to the "value" so they can jack up the price, and makes it more likely to have a colour change and get Fatal1ty label slapped across it to jack up the price more.

I just purchased a GIGABYTE GA-EX58-EXT on eBay for $248.24 using Microsoft Cash Back.

Will only be one build, and I should not be doing that. But what the hell, is that not what credit cards are for.
I'll default on payment and get the tax payers to bail me out.
So far I have the following here or on order.
INTEL CORE i7-965 SOCKET1366 3.2GHz EXTREME 8MB RETAIL $1079.00 - $200.00 cash back = $879.00 Free Shipping @eBay
GIGABYTE GA-EX58-EXT RETAIL $330.00 - $82.75 = $247.25 + Shipping @ eBay
Antec Skeleton ATX Tower Computer Case RETAIL $189.95 - $ 47.46 Instant Discount - $30.00 for applying for BUY.com Credit Card = $112.49 + Shipping @ BUY.com
Total so far: $1238.74 + Shipping.
