To what speeds? DDR2-800 will get your E8400 to 3.6ghz if you run 1:1. If you want higher you may want some decent OCing DDR2-800 (so dang cheap right now, why not?)

(check my sig for a reference setup)

Tigerdirect used to sell every color heatspreader you can imagine, but now I only see black.

Have a link to the memory you are talking about?

What kind of motherboard? If it's an nVidia chipset (780i preferably over 680i) you can unlink the memory and FSB speeds and clock the CPU all you want with any DDR2-800. If it's an Intel chipset, DDR2-800 will get to 3.6 GHz like Tool said before you start overclocking the RAM. Personally I'd get out the paint before I chose crappy RAM based on the color of the heatspreaders, but suit yourself.

Agree with Melt. You can buy aftermarket heatspreaders if you want that look. Or get a memory cooler like the OCZ XTC that covers it, and replace the two 60mm fans inside the cooler with green LED fans. Then you can use whatever RAM you want without having to see the heatspreaders.

I wouldn't paint the Heat spreader. The paint acts as an insulator and will reduce the usefulness of the heat spreader. If you want to color code it and OC really good then get this:
Newegg.com - CORSAIR XMS2 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 1066 (PC2 8500) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory - Desktop Memory

You can always paint the fan housing.

this is the green ram
Newegg.com - WINTEC AMPO 1GB 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 667 (PC2 5300) Desktop Memory - Desktop Memory

i think i should just tell him to cancel the color-coded project?

You could always get something w/ black heatspreaders...it matches anything.

I stand by my get-whatever-RAM-is-good-and-cover-it-with-a-memory-cooler-with-green-fans-instead approach.

Here's a decent RAM cooler: Newegg.com - OCZ OCZTXTCC Memory Cooler For both DDR1 & DDR2 - Memory & Chipset Cooling

I'm sure you can find some 60mm fans that either have green LEDs or none at all.

No, let him keep the colour-coding. A colour coded setup looks nicer than a fruit salad, IMNSHO.
