Now a lot of military spending may seem questionable, and I say that having been a part of the military. But the idea of being able to shoot down an ICBM, or any short range missile for that matter, before it gets to explode over our heads sounds very good to me. In fact, it seems to be one of the best expenditures that I can think of. Sure, there may not be a lot of nukes or Scuds, or other things out there compared to what there used to be, but all it takes is one and there's a lot of serious damage to deal with, not to mention dead people.

Beyond that, if we can afford to give GM/Chrysler tens of billions of dollars that may never be recovered, we can surely spend 6.3 billion dollars on an anti-missile system. At least that's my take on this.

As I recall the "law" or shall we say the constitution says "provide for the common defense and promote the general welfare".

Of course following the law is far too much to expect from people that don't pay taxes in the first place.

    stimulus-fraud-could-hit-50-billion

Swindlers, con men and thieves could siphon off as much as $1 out of every $10 spent as billions of dollars in stimulus money begin flowing into all corners of the economy in coming months.
Well they do have a good start with ACORN getting $2B...

Local shelters lose food aid because of fees | WSBT South Bend - Your Local News Leader | Local News

Three local shelters have lost the ability to acquire food from the Food Bank of Northern Indiana because they charge fees to certain residents or accept their food stamps.

It could create a financial pinch for the shelters: the Center for the Homeless, the YWCA of St. Joseph County and the Salvation Army's Adult Rehabilitation Center.
“The fees were truly not in response to the economy,” says center Director Steve Camilleri. “It's part of a strategic plan to make our guests more accountable.”
Welfare accountable!!! Oh no you won't we'll have none of that here with our government funds.

The YWCA charges $1 to $2 per meal, a fraction of the roughly $6 to serve them, Baechle says. The fees applied to only 10,000 of the 50,000 meals served last year, she says. It's only for women in the shelter's “transitional housing.” Mostly, they are women who are working who have completed the domestic violence or addictions program.

“It's another way to help them budget their money,” Baechle says. “It's good for them to feel good about themselves and take care of themselves.”

The YWCA doesn't charge for kids' meals.
How dare they charge them as much as $2!!! That is nearly $20,000 a month that is being diverted from the crack dealers to fund the YWCA. This has got to stop NOW!!!!! We need those tax dollars back into the economy!!! Without all those crack dealers we won't have jobs for the cops, or jobs for the district attorneys, or the public defenders, we'll have judges unemployed, and prison gaurds laid off, not to mention the lost jobs in prison construction...

Par for the course. Figure out what's right to do and choose to do a 180 degree turn. That's our government.

Live from New York it's tax dollars at play...

700 NYC teachers are paid to do nothing - Yahoo! News

Hundreds of New York City public school teachers accused of offenses ranging from insubordination to sexual misconduct are being paid their full salaries to sit around all day playing Scrabble, surfing the Internet or just staring at the wall, if that's what they want to do.
Because the teachers collect their full salaries of $70,000 or more, the city Department of Education estimates the practice costs the taxpayers $65 million a year. The department blames union rules.

"It is extremely difficult to fire a tenured teacher because of the protections afforded to them in their contract," spokeswoman Ann Forte said.
Once their hearings are over, they are either sent back to the classroom or fired. But because their cases are heard by 23 arbitrators who work only five days a month, stints of two or three years in a rubber room are common, and some teachers have been there for five or six.
Five-six years doing nothing!!!!! Your Government hardly at work...

No, five-six years of being paid $70,000 or more a year to do nothing.

Isn't life in a Union fun? A teacher can commit a sexual offense that would get him/her 10-20 years in a prison (minus time off for good behavior or early parole) and still the school can't fire him/her until the Union arbitrator rules in the school's favor, when and if the arbitrator gets around to it. Wonder if some of these teachers are doing just that, sitting in a prison and getting paid $70,000+ per year?

I forgot about that posting, but it does show how much power a union can have.

Edit: For a different side of political insanity, or should it be called political correctness, here's something that just came in:

    http://www.onenewsnow.com/Education/...aspx?id=576612

Tim Latham has been teaching history and U.S. Government for over 19 years. But after teaching for just one year in the Lawrence School District in Lawrence, Kansas, Latham says his contract was not renewed because school officials did not like his conservative views -- particularly a teacher website that Latham hosted and paid for himself.

Latham had an introductory video on the site where he stated that he wanted students to truly love the American way of life, and he says he was told to remove that as well because not everybody loves the American way of life. According to Latham, other complaints included that he was picking on Obama too much. When he asked for an explanation as to why his contract was not renewed he was told, "You refuse to conform" and "you just don't fit in."
So, it a teacher is convicted of sexual crime with a student, the teacher can be sent to prison and still get a paycheck, but if a teacher criticizes Obama, the teacher gets fired. The first teacher committed a felony, the second teacher merely exercised his first amendment rights under the Constitution. Oh yes, that exercise of American Constitutional rights included wanting students to love the American way of life, but the school district objected because it thought that not everybody loves the American way of life, and they shouldn't have to voluntarily read it on a private website.

Program Pays Girls $1 Per Day To Not Get Pregnant - Health News Story - WXII The Triad

A buck-a-day -- that's the incentive being offered to young girls to keep them from getting pregnant.

The group College-Bound Sisters was founded at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro by Hazel Brown, a maternity nurse who thought too many teens were having babies.

Brown said she hopes the program, which pays $1 each day to 12-to-18-year-old girls, will keep them from getting pregnant. In addition to remaining pregnancy-free, the girls must also attend weekly meetings.

The program is funded by a four-year grant from the state.

"Our three goals are that they avoid pregnancy, graduate from high school and enroll in college," Brown said.

Under the program, $7 is deposited into an interest-bearing college fund that the girls can collect once they graduate high school.

Some recent graduates earned more than $2,000 and are an inspiration to those still in the program.
    OMG....Paid to not get preggo.

If a girl drops out or gets pregnant, her money is divided among the other girls still in the program.
Typical....as with any government program once the money is allocated the taxpayers will never see it back again.

    Another banner day for Government...
    Now from TAXACHUSETTS.....

Mass. is housing homeless in motels
MASSACHUSETTS (WPRI) - A record number of families are being put up in motels in Massachusetts. High unemployment and the rising number of home foreclosures is the reason the state is taking this action.

Housing Massachusetts’ homeless is costing tax payers around $2 million per month. It costs an average of $85 per night to have families, including nearly 1000 children, stay in motels.

The Interagency Council on Housing and Homelessness admits that the use of motels for the homeless is not ideal, but is the best that can be done at this time.

Homeless advocates are worried that families are not getting the support of shelters with living rooms, kitchens, and play areas.
But at least they get a pool, fresh laundered towels and sheets, not to mention the HBO, and room service.

Wait a minute, $85 per night!! That figures in at $2550 per 30 day month. Why doesn't the state just pay the house payment, prevent the foreclosure, thus helping out the banks, etc and save money? At least I'm assuming that the monthly mortgage payment is under $2550 per month. Yes, insanity indeed.

Well, it's probably not as simple as that. I mean, I don't want to come off as a government sympathizer, but I do have limited experience with government entities, and usually they are filled with people (competent or not!) trying to do the best they can with the resources they have available to them. So, maybe people voted on some measure that doesn't allow them to pay the monthly mortgage payments and this is all they can do to keep families off the streets... I don't friggin' know.

Anyway, become politicians and be the change you want to see.

Things are rarely as simple as we expect them to be and in politics but these policy actions always have consequences. It's those unintend consequences of those policies that provide the substance and excitement for this thread to capture.

BTW....You woudn't want me as a politician I'd be like Clint Eastwood with the rifle saying "Get off my lawn" (like sailers sig)(Not exactly the warm, caring, sensitive type but more ruthless, cold and calculating just in case you haven't noticed. ).

Obama Adviser Says U.S. Should Mull Second Stimulus (Update2) - Bloomberg.com

The U.S. should consider drafting a second stimulus package focusing on infrastructure projects because the $787 billion approved in February was “a bit too small,” said Laura Tyson, an outside adviser to President Barack Obama.
Porkzilla II the bigger and more expensive sequel to that bankbuster 2009 production by the Democratic party.

Let me see, they made declared the auto industry too big to fail, so they spent billions of the taxpayers dollars to save GM and Chrysler, and GM and Chrysler failed anyway. They took $787 billion more taxpayer dollars to stimulate the economy, but the economy wasn't stimulated (of course, some of that stimulus money was supposed to be handed out by the IRS, which then invented excuses why it refused to hand out the money), so now they want the taxpayers to hand over yet more money to stimulate the economy. Right. Oh, as a side issue, a huge amount to those bailout and stimulus dollars somehow ended up in the pockets of the very rich people who controlled the banks, auto industry, etc.

Somehow, this looks more and more like a scheme to break the American fools of their sense of well being and turn them totally dependent on the government for help, help which never comes. And they thought Bush was bad for the way he handled Katrina. I'm getting a feeling that they haven't seen anything yet.

Not exactly insanity but at the very least careless.
The Hill’s Blog Briefing Room More spelling errors plague Obama releases

Misspellings continued to plague the Obama administration on Thursday, after two more releases containing errors were sent to reporters in the last 24 hours.

After misspelling the president's name as "Barak Obama" yesterday on an official document sent to reporters, the General Services Administration messed up another message when announcing it had awarded an $18 million contract to redesign the website keeping track of spent stimulus dollars.

"Recvoery.gov Version 2.0 $18 Million Contract Awarded," the release's subject line read. ("Recovery" was spelled correctly in the body of the email.)

The White House also sent out a release containing a typo in its joint statement from White House and the spokesman for U.K. Prime Minister Gordon Brown about the leader between Obama and the British PM today.

"The Prime Minister wlecomed the President's plans for a nuclear security conference in 2010," the sentence read.
You would think they could take the 2 seconds required to hit the spell check button.

While my spelling would win no awards, I'm not giving out documents on a government level to the public or other governments. No really, if these guys can't take the trouble to make sure they spell the name of their own boss correctly, how or why should they be trusted to plan a nuclear security conference? Unless they want to show the lack of security, that is.
