256 Cores In Task Manager??

Thanks to MS actually making an improvement....in Windows 7, 256 cores can now be recognized.

Quote:
Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 group logical processors into sub groups and it would therefore make sense that the task manager be redesigned to show the performance of processors by group. Without which you'll definitely need a 30" LCD. That said however, if you can afford a 256 logical processor machine then you'll probably be able to find a few extra dollars for a large display.

Check Out Task Manager!!

When will they release an OS that can recognize all my 1024 cores?

Great!

now we need someone to start coding programs that actually can go and use over 4 cores....

Apparently whoever was using that 256-core machine was doing just fine with that.

I was thinking about it, and would a bunch of virtual machines do it easily enough?

Dude, it's Intel. They have an army of developers with fewer problems than they have solutions for. I'm sure they just built something to spin up 256 threads that all crunch away at something. It wouldn't take much time at all to do that.

Sun has a server system that has 8x8x4 processors, I believe it's 8 chips per node, 8 cores per chip, and 4 threads per core, registering under Windows 7 as 256 cores, while there's 64 physical processor cores, windows reads thread capabilities as logical cores (ever notice a P4 with HTT registers as dual core? or a core i7 will register as octo-core). It's far from a home PC though which is understandable for the confusion.

maybe Intel/MS is doing a smart thing with larabee and letting the os use the cores if it needs to, with a few locked of to render the gui. a core i7 with 4x larabee would have what, 136 logical cores (assuming 32 per card)? then what if gen 2 had hyperthreading...
