The best running shoe may be nature's own: study

The best running shoe may be nature's own: study | Reuters

Runners who eschew shoes may be less likely to do serious injury to their feet, because they hold their feet differently, Daniel Lieberman of Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts and colleagues found.

Writing in the journal Nature, they said runners who wear shoes tend to hit the ground with their heels first, whereas barefoot runners put the balls of the feet down first.

"People who don't wear shoes when they run have an astonishingly different strike," Lieberman said in a statement.

"By landing on the middle or front of the foot, barefoot runners have almost no impact collision, much less than most shod runners generate when they heel-strike," Lieberman added.

"Most people today think barefoot running is dangerous and hurts, but actually you can run barefoot on the world's hardest surfaces without the slightest discomfort and pain. All you need is a few calluses to avoid roughing up the skin of the foot."

Interesting. Maybe I'll have to try doing some barefoot runs.

I can easily believe this. I enjoy running barefoot much more than running with shoes which is why I'll often go to a big grass field by me and run a few miles barefoot. Maybe the loss of weight that your feet have to pick up each time allows you to not get tired as fast.

I do the treadmill barefoot, and felt better about doing that after watching a Research Channel Youtube channel about it.

And dog poop, used needles and condoms, and a few other things you'd rather not have inside your foot. When I was in Italy, it would have been unthinkable to step outside the house without shoes on, for the afore mentioned reasons..

I do understand the idea of running without shoes though. Years ago I had a pair of Nikes that were very light and had a very thin sole. Those were the best running shoes I ever had. Yes, I wore out the area around the balls of my feet and toes before the heels, so I guess that I was running differently than the common heal first way. I never thought about it before, but it makes sense.

Nike sells what they call "Free". It's supposed to be just like running barefoot. The sole is sliced through at something 3/4" intervals so it's extraordinarily flexible. The shoe has very thin fabric uppers and weighs almost nothing, but it does put a sole between your feet and the ground. I wear a pair outside around the house.

Avoid making any important decisions this week. And, come to think of it, next week as well. In fact, assume this is always the case unless the stars tell you otherwise. - Taurus

Wow. I might have to buy a pair of those and give 'em a try. Thanks for the linkage.

I probably should be using something to protect my feet. The tread gets awfully hot if I'm on there too long. Don't think it was meant to be used by someone with as much weight as I have.
