That should have been thrown out on the basis of obviousness. Mouse gestures use pretty much the same motions. This is foolishness.

I don't want my head to explode out of sheer retardedness, so I'm going to pretend the whole thing is an Onion News hoax, in 3, 2, 1, ->

Wow, the Onion outdid themselves! This is almost as good as that Apple Wheel laptop they invented a while back.

Apparently Apple believes anything they make has only new technology and therefore anything that has any similarity to it is copying it and stealing "Apple's" patent. And if Apple steals ideas and patents from another company, well, Apple just wants others to share with them. They can go screw themselves.

It's been mentioned elsewhere this could be a political move to counter the portfolio of software IP which Google and M$ has against them. So by suing indirectly they might have a small chance.
Whatever this is, you can be sure both M$ and Google are going to be dragged into the mix one way or another.

In a nutshell, Apple has really released a can of worms.

Who's to blame? The braindead law makers.

As it seems you're not aware, the point of a patent is to license monopolies to those who innovate, but limit the period of time they have the monopoly. So it isn't retarded. However, the chronically understaffed nature of the patent office probably is retarded.

In fairness, they have to actually have a patent. The greatest concern is whether multiple touch point screens were prior art. Also the methodology they outlined in the patent has to cover the methodology that is used in android.
