Welcome Back!

I apologize for not getting this up and done sooner. Needless to say the forums, and the front page got hacked, we since then have locked things down, and things appear to be better over all.

I was able to get the front page done sooner, but the forums with all of its data was MUCH more difficult to deal with. Needless to say, I just finished it! YAHOO!

Just in time with Facebook about to take a nose dive, and doing other crazy things to people. (Censorship, etc etc).

  • My my, what have you done Microsoft?

If you buy a perpetual retail license for Office 2013, it will be locked to the computer you first install it on, forever. Buy a new PC and you won't be allowed to install your existing copy of Office on it, even if you wipe the disk of the old PC. You'll have to splurge for a new one.

This is a change in policy from Office 2010. Office 2010 permitted a single transition from one PC to a new one. It's not, however, an entirely new policy: OEM pre-installed versions of Office (and Windows) are similarly tied to their (OEM) hardware and can't migrate. Adam Turner at The Age first pressed Microsoft for clarification over what its "single PC" constraint actually meant, and noted the newly aligned OEM and retail licenses.
Why Microsoft's new Office 2013 license may send users to Google Docs | Ars Technica

Don't expect me to switch to Office anytime soon Kris :P

Why is everyone over reacting to this? I don't see this playing out the way everyone thinks it will.

You will be able to transfer the software. It legally refers to the "Licensed" computer not a physical computer. I realize the FAQ seems to indicate otherwise but again it refers to a mystical "Licensed" computer not a physical one.

I stopped using Office at home a long time ago whenever they came out with the horrid 'ribbon' interface. Another brilliant way to lead people to competing products or even piracy to get around idiotic restrictions placed on their customers.

Office 2013 retail licensing change ties suite to specific PC forever - Computerworld

Hmm... more signs pointing to what I was thinking earlier. I have a feeling Microsoft really wants people to use their cloud Office service.

That link Eura posted seems pretty cut and dry to me. I even went to the M$ office community forums and it seems to be the same answer there. One license per PC, no transfer option. I will stay with 2010 until I have no choice but to change. My system changes too much to use 2013 with its license agreement and I sure as hell am not going to subscribe to Office 365. $100 a year for a software I rarely use at home? Frankly, between this and Win 8, I am fed up with M$. Hopefully there will be a viable alternative to their crap by the time I have to upgrade.

I don't see the issue... just call the 1-800 number and go through the reactivation process manually. If your hardware dies, you change it and the software can be transferred... doesn't make sense any other way.

You know I'd take every opportunity to bash MS Office right?

If you've been shopping for a copy of Office for Mac lately, you'll be paying higher prices than you would have just a few months ago. On Monday, Mac users began realizing Microsoft's quiet price hike thanks to an investigation by Computerworld—Office for Mac Home & Student went from $120 to $140, Home & Business went from $200 to $220, and multi-license editions no longer exist. This reflects as much as a 17 percent hike for the same product.

But while this was brought to the public's attention today, the price hikes most likely came last September when Microsoft announced the pricing of Office 2013. Though there's no clear evidence that the price of Mac Office was raised in September with the Office 2013 lineup, it seems the most likely explanation, as the prices now match across platforms. Computerworld, meanwhile, theorizes Microsoft raised the price in late January when Office 365 Home Premium was launched.

Regardless, unlike our Windows-using counterparts, Mac users are not getting any fancy new software for the newly bumped price. Office 2011 for Mac today is largely the same as it was in 2012 and 2011, but for $20 more.

I still use Office 2007 and haven't seen any need to get a newer addition. I also use the free OpenOffice on a couple computers and it seems to work just as well for my needs. But hey, I'm stone age enough to miss Lotus 1-2-3. Anyway, it seems to me like M$ is out for money and feels it has a big enough base that it doesn't care if it looses a bit of business to those who object.
